Poff Federal Building located at 210 Franklin Road Southwest in Roanoke, Virginia, as the <quote>Reuben E. Lawson Federal Building</quote>, and for other purposes.</official-title></form><legis-body style="OLC" display-enacting-clause="yes-display-enacting-clause"><section id="S1" section-type="section-one" commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline"><enum>1.</enum><header display-inline="yes-display-inline">Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Reuben E. Lawson Federal Building Act of 2023</short-title></quote>.</text></section><section commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="idaae2d563efa84e68ae42f4d1f54248a1" section-type="subsequent-section"><enum>2.</enum><header display-inline="yes-display-inline">Findings</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">Congress finds that—</text><paragraph id="id8e90d2636a474faaac3e31a3973f1ff1" commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline"><enum>(1)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Reuben E. Lawson dedicated his life and career to promoting the ideals of equality and inclusion as a lawyer for the Roanoke chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (commonly known as the <quote>NAACP</quote>) who actively worked to end segregation in Southwest Virginia; </text></paragraph><paragraph id="id173af629bb804191ad4ccf4b2f7ae305" commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline"><enum>(2)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">arguing a number of significant cases in the Western District of Virginia, Reuben E. Lawson fought to ensure the enforcement of Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, 347 U.S. 483 (1954), so that schools in the Roanoke region would be fully integrated; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id3a55cd06dd0b4cb489af1356ee96cd33" commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline"><enum>(3)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Southwest Virginians are indebted to Reuben E. Lawson for his important work in ending segregation, and it is fitting that he be remembered in the current home of the court in which he valiantly fought. </text></paragraph></section><section section-type="subsequent-section" commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id0eed4ef8ae224b8d9d2fc31237927bf5"><enum>3.</enum><header display-inline="yes-display-inline">Reuben E. Lawson Federal Building</header><subsection id="idC91E993C6D814000A9E9263FB10FE8B4" commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline"><enum>(a)</enum><header display-inline="yes-display-inline">Redesignation</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">The Richard H. Poff Federal Building located at 210 Franklin Road Southwest in Roanoke, Virginia, shall be known and designated as the <quote>Reuben E. Lawson Federal Building</quote>.</text></subsection><subsection id="id79948E8AD2A04FD7B303E0346D31CEDC" commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline"><enum>(b)</enum><header display-inline="yes-display-inline">References</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Any reference in a law, map, regulation, document, paper, or other record of the United States to the Richard H. Poff Federal Building shall be deemed to be a reference to the <quote>Reuben E. Lawson Federal Building</quote>.</text></subsection></section></legis-body><attestation><attestation-group><attestation-date date="20240227" chamber="Senate">Passed the Senate February 27, 2024.</attestation-date><attestor display="no"></attestor><role>Secretary</role></attestation-group></attestation><endorsement display="yes"></endorsement></bill>
